BREXIT and Double VAT, by robo on Dec 30, 2020 19:51:03 GMT 1,
New customs paperwork will burden UK businesses and individuals with an additional cost of £7 billion a year to process.
It's been over four years and we're still waiting to learn of one single benefit of leaving the EU.
Still, you won... something, apparently. Get over it, brexitbob.
How did I win?
He means you got the hard right wing outcome you wanted.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Poster Bob on Dec 30, 2020 19:58:31 GMT 1, He means you got the hard right wing outcome you wanted. The thoughts of a typical liberal: everything that doesn't fall lock-step in line with you is hard-right, far-right or alt-right. I voted remain. Brexit has resulted in a massive financial cost for me due to fluctuations in the exchange rate. I just don't cry and overexaggerate petty little things like filling out a customs form; a customs form is not a big deal. People will figure out how to proceed with the new rules.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Happy Shopper on Dec 30, 2020 19:59:09 GMT 1, I agree. Big, well established galleries will be ok but small independent artists based in Europe will simply start saying "sorry, no shipping to UK". It just wont be worth their while to have to deal with all the extra paperwork and the hassle. Of course they won’t, they ship to US, Japan, Hong Kong all outside the EU, sure they can manage.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think they have to register and pay VAT when they ship to any other country. Just the UK insisting on this crazy new system. Or have I understood wrong?

It remains to be seen how much extra these charges will add but my preference will be buying from within the EU going forward.

I stand successfully trolled by you pretending to be a UKIP member and inexplicably claiming your EU art got cheaper despite “massive financial cost”.
I’ve never cried over a customs form since I hardly ever fill them. Sadly a lot of others (including UK musicians, performers, and artists), who rely on EU movement and trade for their work are a lot more affected.
Oops I got lured back to this thread - bye again. Early night for me...

BREXIT and Double VAT, by sleazus1slord on Dec 30, 2020 21:14:07 GMT 1, Filling out a customs form is easy. I did it for 500+ shipments from USA all over the world in the past two years. The thing that isn't easy is the different protocols for each countries delivery service and customs agency. It's simplistic to underestimate the time loss and added inconvenience, not to mention the extra cost. I mean the cost of a lost 6 weeks and having to refund four and five figure transactions to irate customers, not an extra $40 on a book. Funny how you all exhibit your political stances within your impressions on this topic, when we should all be unified in the agreement that extra beuarcracy and moving parts is a bad thing in general.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by peppino on Dec 31, 2020 0:45:27 GMT 1, I live in Italy and hate selling to US, Norway or whatever country where I need to fill papers to ship, since exporting goods for a private citizen is usually fine but if you have a business that's unrelated with some art dismissal, you still risk of being targeted as a professional seller once your tax ID is on those papers, and then you should need to raise invoices and pay taxes on that.
Also, I also hate buying from countries outside of EU because of customs, packages blocked for checks, other papers to fill and often mistakes on the Vat to be applied to art, besides couriers charging for extra days deposits.
In general, exporting and importing from outside EU is stressful and I will always prefer intra EU deals.

Between very strict import laws and a notoriously unreliable postal system, Italy is very high on the list of 'avoid'.
It's a shame too. And, all around, seems to be getting worse not better.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by peppino on Dec 31, 2020 10:56:07 GMT 1, My point was not on how good or bad Italy is. Things intra EU are easy. Things extra EU need more attention and can be a barrier demotivating some people. I'm not a fan of papers, personal attitude, so my comfort zone will lead me to avoid exporting as much as I can. I think this will be the case for many people. That's it.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Reader on Dec 31, 2020 11:07:08 GMT 1, as far as I am aware the process for sending prints to Germany for instance will be the same as sending to Australia, that is there will be a customs sticker to fill out and stick on the tube. For the time being the receiver wont have to pay any duty. I imagine it is the same the other way round for sending art to the UK. One of the drawbacks of Nuart being in Norway (outside the EU), was that every single print shipment required a commercial invoice in triplicate attached to the tube in a transparent envelope, proof of payment (so no more marking the cost down), plus two shipping bills. That's 5 sheets of A4 for each print. Plus the cost of shipping is exhorbitant and comes with an extra surcharge for a tube. It's 50-60 quid at least in costs. Buyers would balk at the cost, which again increased admin. There's only so long and so much you can spend before you're losing money on low-cost primary print sales from emerging names. Probably ok at hobby level and ok for those dealing with high end and in demand prints at 300quid. But smaller galleries and print houses will really struggle without increasing their prices.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by gavatron on Dec 31, 2020 11:31:31 GMT 1, I have to do a lot of shipments globally and it worked out better for us to use an agent to handle all the documentation, fees and bookings. Net saving overall vs booking direct and doing it all myself. Devil is in the codes and terms of sale though for me its generally internal company transfers.

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Lroy on Jan 5, 2021 13:00:54 GMT 1, I really don't know....
Still waiting since one month and more, 7 mails from UK ! Due to delays because everybody wanted to post before Brexit. Now there is this VAT, it means more delays at customs !
Will it be so hard to deal and share with UK now ? Between us Europe/UK... It's a bit incredible when you think to that... We are so close... and so far now.
Today I have heard total lockdown until march.
What will happen to mails ( closed post offcies etc ) ? Its just the beginning.
And I have some posters to sale... Well, not easy indeed !

I also want to know if I'll need to pay import duty/VAT on imports from EU, and vice versa, or if it's just forms to fill in? I have a few things to be delivered soon, so I guess I'll find out!!

I tried to sell a poster ( maybe the buyer, great one, reads me now ) , the package was already done sunday morning. I passed then all the sunday afternoon about these VAT, Paypal, new shipping forms etc .. So, It became very very tiring and depressive moments. I leave it as this. Too much complicated said also the buyer and asked me to let it down. And I did not paid my rent. Boom.
In France, at the first lockdown, all post offices were mostly closed ! and Did not delivered amils properly or sending back to the sender.
I would like to invite you in my country to teach about all this change. I am not business man, only a guy trying to sell a Banksy poster.
Bon courage mon ami !

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Wanchope on Jan 5, 2021 23:55:52 GMT 1, With the risk of someone telling me the answer to my question is in the pages and pages of confusing updates and threads, can anyone simply answer what would I have to pay ( I’m in the UK as a private buyer) if I bought an item from say ebay from a private seller in France for £2000. I have tried reading the government’s website but frankly it keeps talking about businesses and my eyes are starting to bleed reading it 😩
Your kind and simplified replies would be much appreciated
Cheers

How the tax was calculated
Type of tax or duty Tax due

We use HMRC’s exchange rates for customs and VAT (opens in a new window or tab) to make this calculation. We use the rates for the month in which you are declaring.

I believe a recent site I shop from stated that for clothing >110 euros I would incur 20% vat in charges coming into the UK (+ handling) Did a test run here: www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-tax-on-goods-you-bring-into-the-uk/tax-dueTax due on these goods £90.29 Item Price Tax due Antique, collector’s piece or work of art 2,000.00 Euro (EUR) £90.29 Total £90.29 How the tax was calculated Type of tax or duty Tax due Customs £0.00 Excise (alcohol and tobacco only) £0.00 VAT £90.29 Total £90.29 We use HMRC’s exchange rates for customs and VAT (opens in a new window or tab) to make this calculation. We use the rates for the month in which you are declaring. Gavatron you are a gentleman and a scholar, why I couldn’t find that great link I don’t know. My eyes have stopped bleeding and I can now rest in peace!! Cheers my man, very much appreciated! Take care

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Poster Bob on Jan 6, 2021 13:29:15 GMT 1, With the risk of someone telling me the answer to my question is in the pages and pages of confusing updates and threads, can anyone simply answer what would I have to pay ( I’m in the UK as a private buyer) if I bought an item from say ebay from a private seller in France for £2000. I have tried reading the government’s website but frankly it keeps talking about businesses and my eyes are starting to bleed reading it 😩 Your kind and simplified replies would be much appreciated Cheers As far as I know, buying from France will now be the same as buying from USA. i.e. you will pay VAT when it enters the country plus an admin fee. So for 2K you will pay 20% VAT (£400) or, if you're lucky, 5% VAT (£100) plus something like £12 processing fee. It should always be 5% and never 20% in the scenario you outlined above so long as it is a piece of art. I have taken a look at a few online art shops located in France and none of them have changed their checkout system to remove French VAT. Has anyone seen an example of this?

This makes little sense for anyone and will definitely make me think twice about purchasing artwork etc from Europe - and no doubt vice versa for those purchasing from the UK, living in the EU. I'm based in Northern Ireland so no idea if that has any further implications - we seem to be stuck in the middle, so will require customs info (but I assume no VAT/fees) for items above a certain value coming here from mainland UK, whilst I assume also needing the same customs info - with VAT and fees from the EU. Complete mess - hope those who voted to leave are happy with their work now the realities become clear.....

Above from HMRC
so no change
happy to be corrected

eBay charges +20% to uk buyers from a EU member. They don’t seem to make distinctions between private or professional sales...

BREXIT and Double VAT, by Guy Denning on Jan 6, 2021 19:59:44 GMT 1, I've spent days going over this bag of crap. Many messages sent to HMRC (started asking last month) and they're obviously too busy to reply now... Some advice from a collector who was a tax accountant...
Any sales to the UK will now be 20% more expensive due to customs taxes on the UK side. I can't absorb that cost and I can't see buyers wanting to stump up the extra wedge either tbh. And this doesn't include the aggravation of a metric fuck ton of admin - that if I want computerised for 'simplicity' will cost me £92 a month for one agent company's 'basic low cost software plan'.
Now I'm understanding why artists much bigger than me aren't bothering with selling work to the UK any longer. I'll have to follow suit - I can't afford the risky outlay.
And I've got a commission here that I've been working on for months that either I've got to take a £350 hit on or ask the punter to stump up the additional. And that's the minimum extra price involved - god knows what the paperwork and admin charges on top are going to take it to.
If I send stuff via the family as 'gifts' for them to post on, then it's still got to be declared, insurance values deciding import charges etc... so that's not a likely option. Besides, I don't want them getting shite if HMRC decide it's fraudulent.
Then there's the issue of sending work on consignment to UK galleries... ffs

BREXIT and Double VAT, by hellfo on Jan 6, 2021 21:13:04 GMT 1, I have just bought an item on ebay (private to private), that is going to be shipped to italy from uk. Ebay would like to charge me (20% more or less) like it was an International trade. I really don't understand, but I think at last I have to pay. 🤦♂️

Northern Ireland has the best of both worlds at the moment - UK Vat rate and no EU custom charges.

The UK Vat is meant to be removed and you are charged Italian VAT. (Customs fees kick in after a certain price range) But that only works for larger companies and not private sellers. I can buy from Amazon UK and they remove UK Vat and charge me my countries VAT rate. It works out a few quid more but with free Prime shipping it’s fine.
