Was there for Christmas 2004, coming from a fairly small city I was surprised that shops opened on Christmas day. Although saying that I didn't really dig Barcelona and much preferred the Portuguese lifestyle, less English retirees too. ;D

I love Barcelona, haven't been for about a year but if you are looking for somewhere to stay fairly smart, very central (next to Plaza Catalunya) with modest size but funky rooms I really recommend Hotel Pulitzer. Thought it was great value for money and very slick.

Firstly I would recommend that you stay in an apartment, not a hotel. A much cheaper and nicer option if there is a small group of you, or get a smaller studio apartment if going as a couple.
See below details of a particularly nice, spacious apartment that I can personally recommend (stayed there 2 years ago and would have stayed there this Christmas as well had it not been booked) It's just opposite the Marina on the edge of the Barri Gotic so is a great base for exploring Barcelona.

The Barri Gotic, The Born and the Barceloneta areas are the most interesting IMO.
Top Tip for Tapas...
Cal Pep

Just order a selection (you can either choose what you like or ask them to recommend if you are unsure).
Ultmate Tapas and a lesson in service and efficiency. (You can google search these for reviews).
Some nice Tapas inside the Boquera Market (on the Ramblas). Check out what REAL fresh produce and seafood should look like
Obviously if you haven't been to Barcelona before the Parc Guell is well worth a visit.
A very good restaurant is 7 Portes (has been trading for 170 years!). This is accross the road from the apartment I have recommended close to the Marina.

I'm almost positive that I saw this Monkey all over Glastonbury this year and also on the back of the Banksy toilet installation any takers ?

If you'd like to know the location of these I believe they are in the gothic quarter where most of the bars are, and some of them are outside that hidden little absinthe bar, although I was trollied at the time.

I remember looking at it closely at the time, it's certainly sprayed and you can see the paint flaking off the wall. I suppose it could be laser cut ? I have seen such things !
