Yeah, well done johnas. Makes my no smoking until the evening rule seem quite pathetic.

Not cheesy at all Johnas. I remember our conversation a while ago about the Ruts. Wonder what Malcolm Owen would have achieved? You did well mate.

What's your proudest non art achievement?, by scavos on Sept 30, 2007 23:24:45 GMT 1, I missed this thread completely! Hey johnas. Congrats on staying clean. I've seen so many lives destroyed in my work with children through hard drugs. Insite - lovely kids n lovely photos. Romanywg, that work you've done is amazing. I can't even begin to imagine how much time and effort went ino that. Harveyn - thanks for satisfying my curiosity in saying what you do. After seeing the fruits of your labour I've always wondered! My +1 has to go to thomas though for making me choke on my vino and having to dry my keyboard off. Funny as fook. Hope you got him good! Darren Day - the smarmy get! ;D ;D ;D

What's your proudest non art achievement?, by scavos on Oct 1, 2007 0:08:19 GMT 1, Coy? Moi? I mentioned proudest moments in another thread a week ago. Well it was two moments in one sort of. So I'll leave that one there. I used to sing in a couple of very low key indie bands. Gigged regularly, wrote all our own songs which I still treasure. Never amounted to much but I'd still be doing it now if I could.
Something I'm especially proud of is getting an education. Like many of us, I f**ked around all the time at school and left with nothing. Mr Heard (heardy gerdy mushroom man - cos he had a big growth on his nose. Kids are ruthless!) was our commerce teacher who also happened to be our 5th year careers adviser.
He took great pleasure in telling me I was a complete waste of time and 'I'd never achieve anything of a career'. The baldy bearded bumpkin was right for the first 5 years of me leaving school as I went off the rails somewhat!
I then moved away started from scratch got a temp job, voluntary work too and went to night school. Started to find work I really enjoyed doing - working with and for mostly marginalised people, carried on the night classes and got accepted into uni. Eventually smiled with a 'f**k off heardy gerdy smile' as I accepted my First Class BSc degree with honours and an award for my contribution to the course. To see how proud my family were that day really hit it home to me. ;D
I still work with the same groups of people, also volunteer for bereaved children, still a student and now teach too. Never a dull moment! Wouldn't change a thing. ;D

What's your proudest non art achievement?, by jw on Oct 1, 2007 9:46:17 GMT 1, may i add congrats too to all on here, this thread is a good call - is rare to stop an think about the good stuff, we all get too busy an rushed and perspective goes out the window. at the end of the day in my (dull) job when thinking of everything i didn't do / have to do i try to make a point of looking at my outbox and patting self on back for all things i DID do, and sometimes even write down l list of it under the to-do list - just to even the balance! we should keep this thread going and updated.
btw new here, lurked for a while but plucked courage to join in, glad i did (while we're in the soppy thread!)

What's your proudest non art achievement?, by curiousgeorge on Oct 1, 2007 11:01:20 GMT 1, +1Johnus? Ive been clean for over 10 years, well since i ran up a bill that meant i had to hand over my decks and all my vinyl
Been inspired to write a few things down here, someone even suggested it might help me
A little over 4 years ago i was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition, which would require a pacemaker type fitting inside my chest. At the time i was king of the gym and making a damn good living from personal training.
About 10 minutes prior to seeing the consultant i found out i was to be a father, my first thoughts were of dread as this condition has taken at least 12 people from my family, including 2 brothers. First operation (1 month before my son arrived) was botched and required further surgery. The 2nd time i 'woke up' on the operating table to feel the surgeons hands inside my chest trying to remove the old device, i was in total agony.
Inside i was screaming get off you me f***** B****** I'm in agony, so much so i tried to get off the table while cut open, Long story short my shoulder went pop, and also something in my head. Since that day the hospital have totally stonewalled me in terms of me complaining, 4 or 5 letters of complaint never arrived, 2 letters from my GP never arrived.
Since then i have been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and a whole bunch of stuff that goes hand in hand with that. Inside I'm a total train wreck, but help is now on its way, and just this weekend i met someone in a similar situation who has been my biggest help to date(along with a couple of other nice people)
Ive had some very, very dark times over the last 4 years, and just this weekend it was pointed out to me that i should be very proud of anything Ive achieved over this time.
The hardest part for me is being understood, PTSD is a big monster IMO.For example more soldiers who served in the Falklands conflict committed suicide after the war than died in action, said to be due to no-one listening/believing them
Once I've beaten this i plan, like others to get involved more in helping other people

bloody hell curiousgeorge - what an incredible story. I can't believe what happened to you. What an absolute nightmare, and hardly surprising it's had a terrible affect.
I wish I could think of something practical to help you... Best of luck dealing with it all

Whoever told you writing it down could help is spot on and as with anything like this the "talking cure" is the best. There's some amazing therapists around keep on at your Dr and get a referral, might take a while (I was diagnosed last year still waiting) but when you get it it's worth it. Best of luck with your health and family.
