TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by fingerz on Aug 11, 2011 21:51:17 GMT 1, A student has today been jailed for six months for looting a £3.50 case of water from Lidl in Brixton, which seems to support the analysis provided by the Guardian datablog that magistrates appear to be taking a hard line with those convicted of riot-related offences.
Nicholas Robinson, 23, was walking back from his girlfriend's house in Brixton in the early hours of Monday morning when he saw the store on Acre Lane being looted.
Camberwell magistrates court heard the electrical engineering student took the opportunity to go in and help himself to a case of water because he was "thirsty".
But when the police came in, at around 2.40am, he discarded the bottles and attempted to flee the scene. He was caught and arrested by officers at the scene.
PA reports that there were gasps from the public gallery as district judge Alan Baldwin handed down the maximum penalty he could to Robinson, who has no previous convictions, for his part in the "chaos".
The judge said: "The burglary of commercial premises in circumstances such as this, where substantial and serious public disorder is or has taken place is commonly known as looting."
Robinson, had pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a charge of burglary.
He claimed it was an "opportunistic" crime, and he only went in when he saw the store unsecure and wanted a drink.
Robinson will have to spend three months in prison before being released on licence.
that £3.50 just cost the tax payer £11,750 to keep him in jail for 3 month ...... + what ever it cost at court

Hey Fingerz, Personally i wouldn't mind if it cost 20k of my hard earned tax Penny's to keep him in jail..... ! The lowest of the low, the fact he was a uni student adds to the pleasure of the 3 month sentence for me!

True Boaty, the whole riot thing just really got to me, maybe im showing my age....
My wife was stuck at clapham junction station for 2 hours monday night right in the middle of it, and when i hear of people stealing water it really is the last straw for me..... I have no problem with protest/free speech but there's a way to go about it, not terrorizing or stealing from honest people....

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by simonf on Aug 12, 2011 0:25:45 GMT 1, well, the non violent but opportunistic act of this young man in stealing water, is something he will no doubt regret for the rest of his life, he has ruined his career, made it impossible to live in many countries abroad, will be barred from any serious career jobs, and spend 3 months potentially facing serious physical and/or sexuall abuse in prison. Abuse that could cause deep, life long psychological damage.
but as you say he is a cock
And we are all delighted!
I thought a quick summary might be instructive
nighty nightL all

TOTTENHAM RIOTS, by simonf on Aug 12, 2011 12:24:55 GMT 1, It struck me last night that the riots are just the most visible manifestation of a wave of crime and corruption that has infested our society from top to bottom... although most of it at the top.
we have had our MP's lying their pants of cheating and manipulating expenses. claiming for mortgages they have paid off. Swapping homes on a yearly basis so that they can cheat their way to more benefits.
We have just had a couple of police chief inspectors arrested for corruption. It appears large swathes of the police have been taking illegal bribes off corrupt journalists.
Some of the riches people around (piers morgan et al) have been overseeing massive criminal activities, on an industrial scale, as they have hacked into peoples private messages, paid police, and lied.
We have the Murdocks who are apparently are committing perjury left right and centre.
The bankers who got us into this mess, should have been put in prison years ago.
The point I am making is everyone in authority seems to be corrupt Even police commissioners are taking illegal bribes.
Im not justifying anything... but it seems the poorest in society have been taking their examples from some of the richest in society.
They are all criminals, but generally with very few exceptions it is the poorest that will fill the prisons.
