ADVICE ๐ฐ Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Love Is In The Air on Sept 28, 2020 11:31:14 GMT 1, Apologies WhatILike clearly has more knowledge/experience than me.....I got 5% from Phillips without much bargaining so presumed that was possible at others....agree Christies or Sothebys is probably the way to go, perhaps 5-8% might be best you can get but I deffo wouldn't just settle for 10%.

You are the one with the asset they want in their auction. They make their money from the fees etc added to the hammer price. As Bren says should be downwards of 10% but I really think if you haggle you will get 5% or even less, don't accept first offer you get.

Stik Hackney Holding Hands Poster, by Love Is In The Air on Sept 27, 2020 13:56:11 GMT 1, I found out on Friday that Hackney Today is printed at the presses in Watford that my work has a connection with, wish I had discovered this earlier as spoke to a colleague to try and pull in favour but was of course too late to get any posters as they and the papers had long gone!
A guy from my company that works at the presses then got in touch with me too, he couldn't understand all the fuss and was amused by it all when I told him about the prices.
The posters were "slips" put in the papers afterwards and not printed on site. He said they had been expecting a pink poster but it never materialised so I think that is why some papers went out from the press and were distributed without posters.
He said there were roughly 20k of most of the posters but more teal (29.5k) and less blue ones(10k) but I have no concrete evidence to support this and obviously lots of people on here looking for teal so maybe got that wrong.
The numbers he gave me for total volumes of each poster would mean edition is roughly 102k of posters.

I sold two items at auction approximately 18 months ago in two separate auctions, both at Phillips.
Was happy with the process but you obviously have less control over your return compared to a sale on here or via a gallery on commission who fix a price.
The items sold for ยฃ10-20k(one did better than expected, one a bit disappointing).
Your Banksys would sell for a lot more than my items and I managed to negotiate down to 5% commission fee on hammer price with a few polite emails so you should be looking at less than that I would have thought (maybe 3-5%?).
Like I say was happy enough and felt very safe and no chance of any comeback from buyer with condition reports etc. Money took a few weeks then dropped straight in account.
Selling at a gallery guarantees you an amount.....going to auction is probably more of a gamble but you can put in some safeguards and if you get lucky on a good day you can walk away with a packet. Good example of variation at the moment is a Flags last week sold for ยฃ44,100 and then one this week sold at auction for ยฃ35,000. Appreciate they mat be in different condition but clearly one seller did a lot better than the other.

I appreciate HazyDave set a hypothetical question here so don't mean to offend or annoy but he mentioned the 10% commission the auction house takes from the hammer price and others have used this 10% rate in other comments too in last few weeks multiple times. But if we are talking about high end prints or anything Banksy at the moment, the seller will not need to offer 10% or anything close to that.
Others on here will be much much more experienced than me but I have sold two things last year at auction both in the ยฃ5-10,000 ballpark and I paid 5% commission and a small fee for insurance. I achieved this pretty easily negotiating a little over email, so I am sure some of these people selling several Banksys, or in the case of this hypothetical Q a ยฃ100k print, would get 5% and more likely get something like 2-3% as auction houses are keen to have these items in their sale.
To get back on topic, I always think someone selling privately takes less than auction or gallery pricing, and putting your stuff in auction is more risky but has potential of greater earnings if two people fight over an item or someone gets carried away. In the above scenario someone with the print selling privately would sell most likely ยฃ95-125k depending on how many people are desperate for it and will make offers and how desperate the seller is for a sale/quick money.
Small side point on this issue just cos I think it is also coming up on a lot of the Banksy threads too.

No other bids and the item sells for 55k. Makes no sense buyer could have got that for less...anyone else see that or were there already online bids the auctioneer didn't reference??? I would imagine it was someone just trying to blow the rest out the water in one hit? Puts people straight on the back foot. Only guessing though, as it was a little odd.

Cristea Roberts Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition with one of Britainโs greatest living artists, Bridget Riley. The exhibition will focus on Rileyโs printmaking oeuvre, bringing together over fifty years of her graphic works. These rarely exhibited works, which come directly from the artistโs archive, will be displayed alongside a new print edition and wall drawing that will be unveiled at the exhibition.
Bridget Rileyโs prints reflect not only precision but the beauty of her painting practice; this selective retrospective will trace the arc of her innovative printmaking from its origins in the 1960s through to the present day. Riley made her first screenprint in 1962, and since then has gone on to create a significant and varied body of graphic work. Working almost exclusively in silkscreen since the 1960s, a medium which enables precise delineation of form and colour, Rileyโs prints are amongst some of the most accomplished and technically advanced that have ever been made.

Lots of club based art and photography and possibly closest thing you will get to hearing live music or a DJ in a venue for a while so really recommend it. Few pics here to give idea of kinds of things on show. Lots of extra audio as well so if you go definitely bring headphones so you can plug into various things and listen to extra footage and docs.

I have found them great to deal with in the past and they allow payments over 6-12 months if you put down decent deposit, which makes Banksy purchases easier if like me you are not a high roller.
If you are flush for cash, I think high sixties would seal this as they are normally open to offers too.

If it interests anyone on the forum, Hidden Gallery in Bristol have a LIITA unsigned for sale, asking ยฃ72,500. I have found them great to deal with in the past and they allow payments over 6-12 months if you put down decent deposit, which makes Banksy purchases easier if like me you are not a high roller.
