The Jungle in Calais, by Coach on Sept 7, 2016 21:46:58 GMT 1, That's just not true. Compare how many migrants have settled in Germany to how many live here. If we had a land boarder with Europe I think we would easily now have more settled in the UK than any other country in Europe. They just see Germany as the next best option.
Just not true. They see Germany as a welcoming country.

Yep, but with everyone having a smartphone nowadays a lottt more people can see that there are places in the world where things are actually organized, economically pretty stable and where we even hand out money to the 'poor'. Their own government and/or culture has proven for decades they are incapable of organizing a society like that, so they flock to the places in the world where we have ours**t down.
Let me stress that for the real war-refugees there should be a solution (preferably close to their country of origin) but we, as a society simply can't take in all of the people just wanting a 'better life' while importing a culture that is so different from ours that it will inevitably lead to big social issues.
And I truly don't get all the left wing idealist that just want to open up our borders to everyone that wants to live here. Don't you people see that that's simply impossible? Both economically and socially?

The Jungle in Calais, by Deleted on Sept 7, 2016 22:09:51 GMT 1, All I see in even the most left winged media are 95% young adult males throwing rocks at trucks, being economic refugees, feeling like they are for whatever reason entitled to the same wealth we as a Western society have built over many, many years of not being total incompetent idiots. And they simpy want to get to the UK because it has better welfare for immigrants. I suspect a very, very large number of people living there should, by even lefty standards and a sense of law, should be deported back to where they came from because they simply have no chance of ever staying in the EU legally. Your opinion perfectly fits the refugee policy of the Netherlands which is one of the toughest in Europe.
*Shame on us!*

Winky face appropriate? We are talking about the lives of desperate people fleeing war. Try listening to what the surgeon David Nott says about his work in Syria.

The Jungle in Calais, by Deleted on Sept 7, 2016 22:24:06 GMT 1, I will back out of this thread now as it is turning into something sickening.... One more thing ; I would like to apologise for this embarrassing discussion. I only ment to show some awareness on the issue in Calais as displayed on the Dismaland website. I did not know it was about to turn out in a discussion with outrages comments and posts.
I will leave with this:
People are in need of help; let's all get our act together and get them the help they need please.

You just beat me to it. The comments made by a few on this thread I find appalling. It is clear that I won't change their minds. I'm amazed that art lovers, and urban art lovers at that, which has its history in dessent and activism, would hold views like these. I'm sure they feel the same about my views. I've made my views clear. I don't want to get myself banned by losing my temper. I'm out of this discussion too.

The Jungle in Calais, by Daniel Silk on Sept 7, 2016 22:43:32 GMT 1, With housing shortages in the UK, I think maybe a website should be created so families can come forward to take in and share their homes with those stranded in Calais and the war torn countries. Things really need to be done fast to give these people roofs over their heads and food on the table, so it should be less talk and more hands on action. So many people live in houses much too big for themselves or their own family, so if they have strong feelings about helping the refugees then I think the UK government could do more to organise things and put people together.

Surely when we see large natural disasters in the world, similar schemes are organised with people finding space in their own homes to give them a bed and food to eat.
