Banksy โข Peckham Rock Postcard, by met on Sept 18, 2020 21:09:29 GMT 1, Doesn't the pest control authorization wording just refer to the original piece and not these postcards? No.
The "Courtesy of Pest Control Office" text did not appear on the label accompanying the original artwork in the British Museum, whether for:
(i) the official exhibition in 2018โ19, I object: Ian Hislop's search for dissent; or (ii) Banksy's unauthorised intervention in 2005 (i.e. prior to the actual establishment of PCO).
That text was only added to the back of the multiples sold by the museum's gift shop.

Recommended Art Books, by met on Sept 17, 2020 3:03:26 GMT 1, You're welcome, but note there's also a key point that should have been mentioned earlier: Since I only have a landline and a laptop, I am clueless about Imgur's user-friendliness with a mobile phone. And I only have a mobile! I did buy a laptop a couple of years ago but within two weeks my eldestโs laptop died, so I gave him my new one. You will no doubt see if Iโm successful! Thanks again met. That is unfortunate in relation to my own forum posts โ which are not only drafted on a large screen, but also intended to be viewed and considered on one.
If I were forced to read some of my posts (and their wall of text) on a phone, I'd probably lose the will to live.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 17, 2020 2:28:55 GMT 1, Thanks, met! I had the day off so all the time of the world to answer the bonus questions. Especially the answer to the first one took quite some time. It made me dig deep into the history of the former Soviet Union. As I am an history buff I liked that digging very much. And my basic knowledge of the Russian language (I took Russian classes when I was 16) helped me translate the sentences in the opening sequence :-)
kjg
Your bonus prize is a hardcover book of two of my favourite novels, Animal Farm and 1984, with an introduction by one of my favourite writers / debaters / thinkers, Christopher Hitchens.
Also included as part of the package is a collectible American magazine with a stencil-image card insert, from two decades ago.
__________
Knowledge always impresses me, but knowledge in itself isn't especially interesting. What I'm far more drawn to is perceptiveness, investigative resourcefulness, tenaciousness, and the ability to problem-solve, including through logic and reasoning.
As is the case with the majority of these competitions, I try to ensure it's possible to work out or discover the answers to questions even if a participant is initially clueless about the subject matter.
__________
REFERENCE ANSWERS (with commentary)
1. On the wall at the back of the stage where the band is performing, there are seven portraits.
1.1 Name the person in the large centre portrait.
The video's retro USSR references and the type of room where filming took place are important here. They suggest that the photos on the wall are of former senior Communist Party officials, presumably from the Secretariat and/or Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. With respect to the centre portrait, its comparatively-larger size and position would typically be reserved for the most important figure in the Soviet leadership โ the General Secretary of the CPSU.
Researching official portraits of the handful of people who held the position of General Secretary was therefore a natural first step. And given the aesthetic of the video, focusing most closely on the 1970s and 1980s would make sense.
The centre portrait is that of Konstantin Chernenko, who ascended (already in ill health) to the position of General Secretary on 13 February 1984, holding the office until his death on 10 March 1985.
It seems significant to me (especially given the possible political interpretation of Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow) that Chernenko was the last of the Soviet old guard before the Mikhail Gorbachev era of glasnost and perestroika:

![](https://i.imgur.com/TgeJ3rq.jpg)
1.2 Even in the absence of a clear image, if one were seeking to identify the person to the immediate right of the large centre portrait, what guess would be reasonable, and why?
For this purpose, let's assume the six smaller portraits in the video are genuine and historically accurate. It is then very plausible that those to the immediate left and right of the General Secretary are of individuals occupying key roles within the Soviet leadership at the time.
A strong contender for the number 2 position under Chernenko was his ultimate successor, Gorbachev. He would be my best guess for the photo on the right:

__________
kjg โ The thought-process description in your response was an enjoyable read.
This was of greater importance to me than actually identifying the portrait. What people think matters less than how they think.
The fact you took Russian classes as a teenager impressed me as well.
Despite lacking the breadth of your foreign-language skills, I was able to find a translation of the opening text. Apparently, it contains a grammatical error, suggesting it wasn't written by someone whose mother tongue is Russian. My understanding is that it roughly translates as "Former Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan":
![](https://i.imgur.com/wDUOFRQ.png)
The Wikipedia page* for Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow also mentions that filming took place in Kazakhstan.
However, when assessing information available online, the issue of reliability is worth being extra cautious about. With Wikipedia, for example, I've often found the editors are too comfortable simply quoting existing written sources โ without taking the requisite additional steps to verify accuracy.
Regarding the Fifteen Feet... video, the reference to a Communist Party premises looks to have been a case of creative and narrative license by the director and artists.
The identity and location of that building in the first image are unclear. But the former seat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakstan in the mid-1980s was a different edifice altogether โ Akimat House on Republic Square in Almaty:
![](https://i.imgur.com/YxN8yVS.jpg)
The video was actually shot in East London*, at the old Bethnal Green Town Hall* โ which has since been converted into flats and the Town Hall Hotel*. The specific room is now a venue space at the hotel called Bethnal Hall*:

2. In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the original Seven Commandments are as follows:
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal.
What is the apparent name of the "friend" in the video?
Wikipedia extract: According to Orwell, the fable reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War. The Soviet Union had become a brutal dictatorship built upon a cult of personality and enforced by a reign of terror. In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin ("un conte satirique contre Staline"), and in his essay "Why I Write" (1946), wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole".*
The "friend" seems to be a whippet. Based on the closing credits of the video, it looks to be named Harry or Hรฅrry Y Dรธg:

![](https://i.imgur.com/k7FK4H2.png)
3. One of the many people featured in the video includes somebody with whom Nick Cave has a female-singer friend in common. Both of them have worked with this female singer.
In Cave's case, it resulted in a song โ the separate video for which references the character of a famous book, and a well-known painting by a British artist.
Jason Donovan is among those in this video, and he seems to be having a splendid, messed-up time.
The female singer referred to is Kylie Minogue. She left Donovan for Michael Hutchence, the man who introduced her to Nick Cave. Minogue and Cave duetted on Where The Wild Roses Grow, a song the latter had written with Minogue specifically in mind.
3.1 Name the character, the book, the painting, and the painter.
Character: Ophelia Book/play: Hamlet by William Shakespeare Painting: Ophelia (1851โ52), in the collection of Tate Britain, London Painter: Sir John Everett Millais
[This question was drafted by me at some point last year. Shortly afterwards and to my chagrin, I realised the answers were immediately available to anyone simply checking the Wikipedia page* of that song. Nevertheless, the subject of Ophelia interested me enough to retain the question.
A similar situation occurred for another competition I was preparing โ with respect to the UNKLE video for Rabbit In Your Headlights and it's apparent nod to the memorable road-tunnel scene from Alan Clarke's Made in Britain (1982)*.]
3.2 Post the relevant separate video, as well as an image of the painting in question.

Banksy โข Festival, Destroy Capitalism, by met on Sept 16, 2020 12:38:19 GMT 1, Is this the rarest of all unsigned prints ? No. Radar Rat is. There are no unsigned Radar Rats Yes, there is. No there isn't. Dirty Funker EP doesnt count Oh yes there is... Oh no there isn't.....as a print all signed edition of 75.
I wouldn't describe it as a proper edition โ because it's likely to be a single print, and the result of a quick-fix response to an earlier human error at POW โ but technically Radar Rat has become an unsigned edition of 25.*
As with many things Banksy-related, those with experience (and who've also learned from that experience) will appreciate how it can often be unwise to assert a negative by claiming something does not exist.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 15, 2020 5:07:05 GMT 1, 1.1 Name the person in the large centre portrait. The name of the person in that portrait is Konstantin Chernenko. As the video is situated in the bureau of the Communist Part of Kazakhstan (as the opening text says) I guess that that person would be the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan which at that time was Dinmukhamed Kunaev. His portrait is smaller than Chernenko's portrait and placed right of it because despite he is the leader of Kazakhstan, his country is still a Union Republic within the Soviet Union, the union where Chernenko holds sway. 2. I didn't expect responses so quickly. Will post reference answers tomorrow (Wednesday), including an alternative I came up with for Question 1.2.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 13, 2020 23:41:44 GMT 1, Well done and congratulations, kjg. Hope you didn't have to play Lucky Star on repeat, to the point where other household members became concerned for your welfare. This was a competition I'm pretty content with. It was almost two years in the making โ finally coming together after I discovered the wonderfully simple and understated Cross Bones Style video a few weeks ago. [You'll see that Cat Powers / Chan Marshall is also wearing multiple black rubber bracelets as a nod to Madonna.]I'll post the reference answers on or before Sunday evening (13 September). There will be bonus questions as well, which took me some time to prepare. If you choose to go for the bonus prize, you'll have until Wednesday night (16 September) to respond. Thanks, met! To be honest, I watched Lucky Star quite a few times. Even in slowmotion. But I did that in my mancave, so my wife and my daughter were not bothered by it. Another similarity I saw, is that one of the dancers in Cat Powerโs video is wearing a Madonna style lace glove. And yes, I definitely want to go for the bonus prize :-)
Nice spot with the lace glove, kjg. It pains me that I hadn't myself noticed this Madonna reference in the Cat Powers video. At the same time, it's a healthy reminder for me to keep trying harder.
Your bonus questions will be set out in a separate post to follow.
REFERENCE ANSWERS
1. Part A: Annie Jacobsen mentions that euphemisms have long been used by the CIA for its assassination programmes.
What was the name of the relevant tertia optio committee under President Eisenhower?
The CIA's assassination programme under President Eisenhower was the "Health Alteration Committee".
[It was called "Executive Action" under President Kennedy, and "Pre-emptive Neutralization" under President Reagan.]
2. Part B: When describing his wariness of Huawei and, more generally, how big Chinese national companies are working to a very different model than large American companies, Jamie Metzl refers to a Chinese government rule.
What is that rule?
According to Jamie Metzl, every big Chinese national company has to have a Chinese Communist Party cell inside of that company.
Metzl: [Abridged and edited.] So, Huawei, it's a complicated story. For sure, the founder of Huawei is a former Chinese military officer. For sure, in the early stages of their company, they straight-out stole lots of source code from companies like Cisco. For sure, we should be really worried if Huawei is the sole supplier of the infrastructure that supports 5G all around the world, because the Chinese government would have access to everything.
So that leads us to Question 1: Is there a problem with Huawei itself? And I can tell you the answer to that first question is probably yes. But let's just say Huawei is a legit company and they're not totally, intimately connected to the Chinese government. We then have Question 2: Can we trust their relationship with the Chinese government?
And the Chinese government has a rule that every one of these big Chinese national-champion companies has to have a Communist Party cell inside of that company. So we can't think of big Chinese companies just like we think of companies here. We have to think of them as quasi-State actors.
That's why this fight that's happening right now is so important. And that's why, like, when China is out investing in different parts of the world including Africa, their companies are kind of acting like arms of the government. They're making all kinds of investments that don't really make sense if you just see, "Well, this is a company doing something." If you say that this is a company with backing by the State that's fulfilling a function that supports the State, it's a very different model.
So I am actually quite concerned about Huawei. And I'm not a fan of everything that this [Trump] Administration is doing, but I think on China it's important that we need to stand up. And I think pushing back on Huawei is the right thing to do.
[...]
And so when we have our companies, you're out in some place in Africa and you're competing with a Chinese company to do something โ build a port or whatever โ and you're competing because you are an American company, and so you have your calculus: "Alright, this is the port. What's the income stream going to be about?" And you have a certain amount that you can bid, because otherwise it becomes a bad investment. But with the Chinese company, their calculus is not, "Is this a good or bad investment?" It's, "What is the State interest in controlling or quasi-controlling this asset?" And so that's why we can't project ourselves onto the Chinese. We can't say they're just like us, just different. We have different models, and our models are competing.
[...]
I'm all for open competition. I'm all for free trade. It has to be fair. But I think that what China is doing... China recognised as a State that they could use the tools of capitalism to achieve State ends. And I think we need to be very cautious about that.
[...]
I just feel like what some Chinese companies are doing, it's not competition, it's they have become quasi-State actors. And if that's what they're doing, I think we need to respond to them in that way.
3. Part E: The songs or videos in Part E have something in common. Post the missing three videos that serve to better illustrate this connection.
The videos for all three songs in Part E are parody-tributes to earlier videos by other artists.
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970) - uploaded by Black Sabbath
The Breeders - Safari (1992) - uploaded by The Breeders
For their last venture into video making (โSafariโ), the Breeders copied the set from an old Black Sabbath video. โThere was a different video I was looking for actually,โ says Kim, describing an old Who video she had originally wanted to emulate. โThere was a cool set that Iโd seen the who [sic] use, black and white, really stark. So I rented out this โMTV Closet Classicsโ videos and I couldnโt find that but I saw this Black Sabbath one which was excellend [sic]โ*
_____
For those in the know, โSafariโ is an obvious tribute to Black Sabbathโs 1971 video for โParanoid,โ right down to Kim Dealโs brown leather jacketโidentical to the one Ozzyโs wearing in the original video. Another fun thing to watch forโKelley Dealโs almost complete inability to play guitar. At about 59 seconds into the video, thereโs a clear shot of her staring vexedly at the neck of her guitar as she concentrates on getting the chord shapes right. I wouldnโt have noticed this, but when the Breeders were interviewed on 120 Minutes in 1993, around the time of Last Splashโs release, the video for โSafariโ was played and she and Kim cracked jokes about how Kelley basically couldnโt play the song at the time they filmed the video.*
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow (2001) - uploaded by mortst
Nadine Shah - Fool (2015) - uploaded by Nadine Shah
Explaining the video, which is directed by Anna Victoria Best and inspired by the video for "Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow" by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Shah said:
"We got a bunch of our friends together and took over the back room of a social club in South London. We got everybody drunk on wine (that my best friend brought with her in suitcases) and I attempted to teach them a dance routine. In hindsight, I probably should have taught them the routine before the wine. Either way, I think they all look great. Iโve got a beautiful looking bunch of weirdoโs for friends."*
Madonna - Lucky Star (1983) - uploaded by Madonna
Cat Power - Cross Bones Style (1998) - uploaded by Matador Records
Chan Marshall: The real dance song is "Cross Bones Style." I'm thinking of making that the single and doing a full-on "Lucky Star" style video. Like Madonna, dancing in a white room. I'm sure I'll chicken out though.*
Well done and congratulations, kjg. And yes, I definitely want to go for the bonus prize :-) Nice spot with the lace glove, kjg. It pains me that I hadn't myself noticed this Madonna reference in the Cat Powers video. At the same time, it's a healthy reminder for me to keep trying harder. Your bonus questions will be set out in a separate post to follow. REFERENCE ANSWERS1. Part A: Annie Jacobsen mentions that euphemisms have long been used by the CIA for its assassination programmes.
What was the name of the relevant tertia optio committee under President Eisenhower? The CIA's assassination programme under President Eisenhower was the "Health Alteration Committee". [It was called "Executive Action" under President Kennedy, and "Pre-emptive Neutralization" under President Reagan.]2. Part B: When describing his wariness of Huawei and, more generally, how big Chinese national companies are working to a very different model than large American companies, Jamie Metzl refers to a Chinese government rule.
What is that rule?According to Jamie Metzl, every big Chinese national company has to have a Chinese Communist Party cell inside of that company.
Banksy 'Glory' original alt version?, by met on Sept 13, 2020 16:57:46 GMT 1, Hi all, Thought Iโd share a recent find with you and, as the most pedantic bunch of Banksy goons, get your opinion! So, for starters this came from ebay. Yes I know, groan, not another etc etc, but hear me out. I bought this for ยฃ200 just because it seemed interesting and slightly odd. The seller claimed it was โfoundโ by some bins in East London several years ago. So, many of you will know the original of this Banksy piece, Glory. Sold last by Christieโs in 2013 for a mere ยฃ70,875. Not his best work IMO, but hey, interesting nonetheless. So, the large size version is here (https://www.christies.com/img/LotImages/2013/CKS/2013_CKS_01135_0381_000(banksy_glory011356).jpg) if you care to compare, however I have done so below. Firstly, hereโs the one I bought. ![](https://ibb.co/qJy9Mc6) Ok, so the reason that this seemed interesting is, firstly, why someone would bother to fake it? Everyone with access to a computer and half a brain can figure out it was sold by a decent auction house, and is now either hanging on the wall of a lovely house or wrapped up and hidden in a bank vault somewhere. So, why bother? Youโre never going to fool someone into spending a lot on it, because theyโll do some research (most likely). So, to go to all the trouble of copying it, finding exactly the same frame and faking it in general just seems a bit of a low value effort. Secondly, the version I have is different to the original, so again, if you were going to fake it, why make it different? Here are some comparison images between the original and mine. I guess one reason is that someone like me might buy it, think it was some kind of pre-production effort and write about it on an urban art forum, but again for ยฃ200 it seems an awful lot of work. There are plenty more differences if you look, well, not even that closely. Lots of bits on mine where it looks like the paint has been brushed and filled in on top. ![](https://imgur.com/3U1bWX6) You might think that the differences are just someone embellishing a print with extras, and it certainly looks like that in places, but my version actually has parts (such as the hook of the G and the intersection of the R) where you can see the print below, whereas on the original you cant. This would suggest that its not done over the top of a copy, as you wouldnโt be able to see those parts. Itโs possible that someone found the original Spitfire print, not hard, and did it from scratch, but to get it so similar is pretty impressive, no? Iโve taken my version out of the frame to examine more closely, and itโs hard to tell whether itโs paint or print, but looks in places definitely like paint. ![](https://imgur.com/aPZxz09) There are also some scratches bottom centre and right that appear on the original and not on mine, which would again suggest itโs not a copy, see below ![](https://imgur.com/FoHtG40) The print itself is a fairly flimsy affair stuck onto some cardboard, which kind of suits Banksyโs style to my mind, but thatโs just conjecture. The backing board is signed with what looks to me a pretty decent signature for the date, nice and fluid etc, plus the shadowed remnants of some other items having been sprayed on there. Thatโs nice, but if itโs just a pre-production version, or a test, or whatever, why sign it? ![](https://imgur.com/LLIQjC2) ![](https://imgur.com/Q5BP294) As we all know, without a COA itโs not a real piece, and even if this is real I doubt PC would certify it, so as not to detract from the original, but hey, seemed like an odd piece that didnโt have any immediate explanation as to its existence, so worth a punt for a few hundred ยฃ. Basically, itโs not as good as the original, but itโs both good enough to be maybe 95% similar yet different. Be interested to hear everyone elseโs thoughts. Ta
Among the different possibilities in this instance, one of two scenarios appears most likely:
1. You are a fraudster playing the faux-earnest card โ hoping that some dupe will reach out and offer you a sum that will make the theatre of your con worthwhile.
I seem to recall another "Banksy discovery" story having previously been described in a similar writing style by a different member with a low post count. Do you have, or have you ever had, another username on this forum?
Would a dated screenshot be available of the eBay listing you refer to? If I myself spotted a potentially authentic Banksy original for ยฃ200, I would take multiple screenshots of the listing after my purchase, if only for provenance.
[The likelihood of this first scenario being correct stops me from describing the multiple elements in your posts that look and sound completely off. I have no interest in helping fraudsters become more persuasive with their future scams.]
2. You are a genuine dupe โ insufficiently informed, naive, having regrettably fallen prey to confirmation bias and wishful thinking.
Fortunately, however, the financial loss you incurred was nominal. Your story may also serve as a helpful warning to other members here, so thank you for sharing it.

How do I hang this frame?, by met on Sept 12, 2020 17:45:02 GMT 1, Time to put the Insect on the wall and realized I donโt now how to affix this type of sawtooth frame to the wall. Feeling kind of like an idiot, so please go easy on me. All of my other frames have a wire or are small enough to just hang from a nail. Thinking that maybe I hang the jagged edge onto a nail? There are sawtooth metal pieces on either side of the top of the frame. Thank you! ![](https://i.imgur.com/g3lfbtI.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/fAFiG21.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/nMbdllA.jpg)
Sounds like you are possibly missing the accompanying WallBuddies hanger accessories:

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by met on Sept 11, 2020 23:38:28 GMT 1, I really hope at least one person listens to this and enjoys it. Iโve recently become quite obsessed with this chap. I think heโs excellent. โJoggingโ is the track that first captured my attention. Just love his lyric writing. Something wonderful about the way he captures the absurd mundanity of life and makes the ordinary poignant. Dunno...just really like him. Heโs definitely an acquired taste but these are my favourite of his tracks. I really hope he gets a listen and a new fan from at least one of you! met, I donโt know why but I really want you to like him!!!
Thank you. It was actually @ekap who initiated me to Richard Dawson in October last year*.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 11, 2020 23:32:03 GMT 1, (i) The rule is that wholly or majority state-owned companies must โintegrate party leadership into every part of company governance.โ This gives the government greater control of companies that span industries from energy to banking and telecommunications. (ii) A video that that more closely influenced the Safari video is Black Sabbathโs official video of Paranoid: (iii) Another similarity between the Cross Bones Style video and the Lucky Star video is that both Cat Power and Madonna are wearing yellow nail polish.
Well done and congratulations, kjg.
[You'll see that Cat Powers / Chan Marshall is also wearing multiple black rubber bracelets as a nod to Madonna.]
I'll post the reference answers on or before Sunday evening (13 September).
There will be bonus questions as well, which took me some time to prepare. If you choose to go for the bonus prize, you'll have until Wednesday night (16 September) to respond.

Recommended Art Books, by met on Sept 11, 2020 22:14:06 GMT 1, Imgur and Imgbb are different businesses. Without having tried Imgbb, I'm not in a position to say which platform is easiest to use, but I imagine they're quite similar. After setting up an account with Imgur.com, I found everything pretty straightforward: 1. When uploading to your personal library, you can use the 'browse and select' option or 'drag and drop'. 2. Your images are set out in a grid of 60 thumbnails per page (5 columns x 12 rows). 3. Basic editing features also exist (crop / resize / rotate). 4. To post one of your images on a forum, click on the thumbnail to expand the image, then copy the BBCode and paste it directly into your post. On a separate note, I quite like the Imgur homepage, which has user posts and comments that are often humorous, and sometimes even interesting. Thank you met. I have clearly tried before as I have the imgur app on my phone. Iโll give it another go. Appreciate your time.
You're welcome, but note there's also a key point that should have been mentioned earlier:
Since I only have a landline and a laptop, I am clueless about Imgur's user-friendliness with a mobile phone.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 11, 2020 21:35:25 GMT 1, 1. Part A: Annie Jacobsen mentions that euphemisms have long been used by the CIA for its assassination programmes. What was the name of the relevant tertia optio committee under President Eisenhower? The name of that committee was: Health Alteration Committee 2. Part B: When describing his wariness of Huawei and, more generally, how big Chinese national companies are working to a very different model than large American companies, Jamie Metzl refers to a Chinese government rule. What is that rule? That rule consists of two pieces of legislation: the 2017 National Intelligence Law and the 2014 Counter-Espionage Law. The first law states that โany organization or citizen shall support, assist and cooperate with the state intelligence work in accordance with the lawโ, while the second law states that โwhen the state security organ investigates and understands the situation of espionage and collects relevant evidence, the relevant organizations and individuals shall provide it truthfully and may not refuse.โ 3. Part E: The songs or videos in Part E have something in common. Post the missing three videos that serve to better illustrate this connection. The Breeders' video of Safari was inspired by Black Sabbath's video of Iron Man: Nadine Shah's video of Fool was inspired by Nick Cave's video of Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow: Cat Powers' video of Croos Bones Style was inspired by Madonna's video of Lucky Star:
Not quite, kjg, but close enough to keep this competition open for you exclusively.
To win it, you have until 22:00 UK time tomorrow (Saturday) to:
(i) Correct your answer for Question 2. [What you mentioned is not the rule that Metzl refers to.]
(ii) For Question 3, post another video that more closely influenced the Safari video by the Breeders.
(iii) In relation to Question 3, leaving aside (a) the white backgrounds, (b) the use of dark clothing for contrast, and (c) synchronised dance moves, list at least one similarity between the Cross Bones Style and Lucky Star videos.

Recommended Art Books, by met on Sept 11, 2020 19:56:22 GMT 1, Although it has since partially backtracked, when Photobucket abused its position * more than three years ago by suddenly blocking image visibility on third-party sites (unless users paid for an expensive subscription), I switched to Imgur for my photo-hosting needs. Imgur has worked quite well for me. Copy the BBCode of the image you've already uploaded to your Imgur library and then paste directly into your post: ![](https://i.imgur.com/bkH7JX5.png) *** Just remember not to later delete any images in your Imgur library if you've already used them on a third-party site like this forum. Is Imgur the same thing as Imgbb? If not, is it better (by which I mean easier to use)? I need something that is appropriate for an IT imbecile. When I first joined Cocteau very kindly called me to take me through the steps to be able to use photobucket, so I was not very happy when that became no longer available for free.
Imgur and Imgbb are different businesses.
Without having tried Imgbb, I'm not in a position to say which platform is easiest to use, but I imagine they're quite similar.
After setting up an account with Imgur.com, I found everything pretty straightforward:

Recommended Art Books, by met on Sept 11, 2020 15:19:42 GMT 1, Delighted to have picked this up. Iโve been after a comprehensive Munch monograph for a while. Until now Iโve only had the Tate exhibition catalogue. This large book runs to almost 300 pages. 258 colour images. Image quality is good. ibb.co/tqLnt1Libb.co/tqLnt1LWell I managed to upload one picture a few days ago, but the knack is gone!

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 11, 2020 3:22:51 GMT 1, 1. Part A: Annie Jacobsen mentions that euphemisms have long been used by the CIA for its assassination programmes. What was the name of the relevant tertia optio committee under President Eisenhower? ANSWER: Health Alteration Committee 2. Part B: When describing his wariness of Huawei and, more generally, how big Chinese national companies are working to a very different model than large American companies, Jamie Metzl refers to a Chinese government rule. What is that rule? ANSWER: The big Chinese champion companies have a communist part cell inside of that company. 3. Part E: Post three additional videos to illustrate the connection between the songs or videos in Part E. ANSWER: I found a few connections for the videos. My main connection between the videos seem to be all female lead singers dealing/dealt with a past relationship while having a strong presence on a stage. Here are 3 videos that illustrate this connection. [...]
Sorry โ Incorrect, @afreefilms, and I'll explain why at a later point.
But your responses did make me realise one of my questions was unhelpfully (and perhaps unfairly) equivocal.
Provided no other eligible member wins the competition beforehand, I'll post a rephrased version of that question at 20:00 UK time today (Friday). Afterwards, please feel free to have a second attempt at answering all three questions.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 11, 2020 0:59:41 GMT 1, I've been informed that Nadine Shah's Fool may not be visible on YouTube to all US residents.
In case anyone affected lacks resourcefulness, here it is on the Dailymotion site:
Nadine Shah - Fool (2015) - uploaded by Roxwel
Hat-tip to supercockle for the first forum mention of this artist in August 2013* and to expired member @sean for the first video posting in November 2013* โ through whom I discovered Shah's music.
Courtesy nod to godโs ultimate noise for introducing me to the Fool video in September 2018*. That was the genesis for this particular competition.

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 10, 2020 3:10:58 GMT 1, While we wait for someone to put in the time and do the research to win the latest competition (especially for the third question), here's a set by someone I very recently discovered โ Jessa Reed.
This 2018 routine left me a bit dumbstruck. It is remarkable, Holy fuck-style comedy. And curiously inspirational.

which artist ?, by met on Sept 10, 2020 1:32:32 GMT 1, that's great thanks for this , so many people believe this to be a Banksy for reasons unknown to me From the date of Maynard's posts, the artwork is at least eight years old.
In the earliest reference I discovered, his comment was "Hitchcock gets the Banksy treatment.":
www.facebook.com/maynard.art.design/photos/a.127311047419376/127311054086042
But far less is usually required for a stencil-based image to be called a "Banksy".
And once you have somebody asserting a falsehood online, plenty of others blindly parrot the same. The assumption is then, "Well, I read/heard it from multiple sources, so it must be accurate; they can't all be wrong."
Hence the profusion of non-Banksy "Banksy" tattoos, conspiracy theories, and the spread of misinformation generally.
Bullshit Said With Confidence Becomes The Truth*

Dran large canvas for sale, by met on Sept 9, 2020 16:17:58 GMT 1, Hi everyone! Sorry for setting-up another thread but I could not recover the other one I am putting this back on sale here as yesterday this didn't reach my reserve at Digard (so it was not sold there). I am not in a rush to sell or selling this out (no COVID fire sale), so I have time to review offers that will come. I have done several transactions here before (including for this piece โ if you search old posts you can find it) and can provide references. I am based in Rome, Italy, but the painting is in Paris ready for shipping. The details of the painting are the following: Name: Fuck! Medium: Spray Paint on Canvas Dimensions: 100cm X 50cm Date: 2007 Provenance: Acquired directly from artist's studio by the former owner acquired by myself from the above COA: Yes Edition: unique Overall conditions are very good. The wood framework where the canvas has been mounted doesnโt look โnewโ but I would not consider that an issue. Price: offers above Euro17k, plus shipping and transaction costs (if any). Happy to provide further pictures or reply to your queries via PM. Thanks for looking! ![](https://i.imgur.com/Tvb07YZ.jpg)
Regarding the artwork itself, my issues with it are both visual and conceptual:
The pink drip to the left-centre of the canvas seems clearly unintentional, and presumably occurred while painting the air balloon above. For whatever reason, Dran chose to leave it in the finished piece. This was arguably an error of judgement. My own eyes are immediately drawn towards that drip, to the point where it becomes highly distracting โ diminishing the overall work.
Is that a computer monitor being held up by Libertas's left arm and hand? The meaning of such replacement for the tablet with the date of the Declaration of Independence is unclear to me. But I also don't find the resulting ambiguity to be especially interesting.
Hi all, any experience with Tate Ward? I am not sure I want to try another French auction house! Thanks! I can thoroughly recommend Tate Ward. May I suggest that you lower your price expectations - Iโm a big fan of Dran and have been following his market for some time. Image, style and subject is everything - size and medium are lower down the list of price indicators compared to other artists. I personally wouldnโt bother going to auction in the UK or France unless your price point in substantially lower. This is my honest assessment. Best of luck.
Looking for offers. Thanks! I am looking for offers around Euro15k
The substantial lowering of seller price expectations was the most sound advice I spotted on this thread.
Sadly, that advice was not heeded.
This piece did not find a new home yet...come on! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Depending on the where it has to be shipped, I may consider to bear shipping charges. That is a cool piece and massive too. His print market seems fairly robust but no idea about his originals. This may just be a COVID dip. Potentially worth holding out a little before selling it. GLWS I agree and this is what I am about to do if sensible offers are not coming through. Hello I am new on this forum but am interested in buying, can you pls dm me to discuss? Just saw this, sorry. I have dm'ed you!
I think its burned mate, too many bumps and missed auction. Bury it 5 years and take it out then
Agreed that this piece has been burned โ and completely unnecessarily โ by what I would describe (frankly and without malice) as sharky's foolish approach to reselling a one-off painting.
I would personally delete the thread. Its a good piece, people will buy it, and probably at a higher price then.
Entire threads can only be deleted by forum Admin.
That said, I also believe it's contrary to the higher interest of the forum and its members for posts or threads to be deleted. Even the nastiest ones have potential to offer beneficial educational opportunities.
Here, we have an excellent case study on how not to sell unique artworks.
This has value to the wider forum, even if it's at the expense of one member.

Banksy Clear Out Wall piece, posters, cards & stickers, by met on Sept 7, 2020 14:57:38 GMT 1, Morning all, have had loads of great interest in these and some interesting chats with members.
I am trying to be fair to those I have said can have bits and bobs by giving them a little time to confirm and send payment. This is despite some other members sending better offers since.
I be in touch by everyone by PM over the next few days to let you know what I have left or just to let you stuff has sold.
I have a few other banksy bits Ill post over the next week as well so keep an eye out.
Cheers

And they are only truly tested when an individual chooses to do what is right, despite the existence of other options that are more beneficial (or less disadvantageous) to them โ especially from a financial perspective.

Keeping one's promises or commitments should be the norm, and not really something that merits applause. But I'm also frequently reminded of how rare this approach seems to be, when upholding it requires any element whatsoever of sacrifice.
What I often see is an attitude best described as, "You can count on me. I am always true to my word. Except when it comes at a personal cost or is otherwise inconvenient."
I was therefore heartened to read your post, Young Squire. It made me think you were someone I'd be proud to stand next to.
Morning all, have had loads of great interest in these and some interesting chats with members.
Cheers

THE MET LOTTERY, by met on Sept 3, 2020 0:09:14 GMT 1, @afreefilms - See my reply to Dive Jedi above. Since there was an unfortunately confusing cross-posting while I was drafting, I'll give you another attempt to identify one of the remaining three paintings and its artist. So people know I wasn't just copying off Dive Jedi, here's another response for #3. I'm just as confident in that answer as my 1st response ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) 3. The painting directly behind the auctioneer is called La Folfe de St. Tropez (1948) by Charles Camoin
Impressive work, @afreefilms (and close enough with the artwork's title). Congratulations on winning.

And how good is that Fiona Apple video? The combination of imagery and lyrics (especially the mantra, "Jai guru deva om") is arguably Banksy-level in juxtaposition.
